Essay on Contrasting Genesis I and II of the Holy Bible
Contrasting Genesis I and II Where Genesis I describes a more ordered creation - the manifestation of a more primitive cultural influence than was responsible for the multi-layered creation in Genesis II - the second creation story focuses less on an etiological justification for the physical world and examines the ramifications of humankinds existence and relationship with God. Instead of Genesis Is simple and repetitive refrains of and God saw that it was good (Gen 1:12, 18, 21, 25), Genesis II features a more stylistically advanced look at the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens (Gen 2:4). While both stories represent different versions of the same Biblical event, Genesis II is significantly moreâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦(Genesis 2:4-7) The second account of creation differs from the first story in three important distinctions: the indication of creation in a single day, the creation of man from the dust of the ground (Gen 2:7) rather than in our image (Gen 1:26), and the submissive role of women as a mans helper (Gen 2:18) rather than the equal created in the first story. The single-day creation indicates a combination of separate biblical traditions, rather than a specific discrepancy in the believed happenings, as well as implies that the society of the second creation placed less value in Gods creation of the physical world than in the role of humankind in that environment. Where the creation told in Genesis I centers on Gods process of shaping the world from a formless void (Gen 1:2) into an ordered, comprehensible physical world - a transition that parallels the Hebrews change from nomadic life to a settled society - the second creations fully-functioning world is merely a background for the greater role that man and woman will play. And the LORD God commanded the man, You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die. (Gen 1:16-17) It is with the introduction of the tree of knowledge of good and evil that the drama of creation at Gods hands is no longer comparable with the drama that will unfold for man and woman.Show MoreRelatedTheology of Poverty3073 Words à |à 13 PagesNovember 21, 2011 Bethel University Table of Content I. Jane Eyre Movie Review Essay - 1850 Words
Jane Eyre: Movie (2011) Novel Comparison Jane Eyre is a story about a young womenââ¬â¢s journey through her life that starts with her from a young age. She starts out as an orphaned girl and is going through miserable times but eventually goes on to become her own person. On the way she meets many unique people and learns more about herself and society. Her Journey is full of surprises whether good or bad and she must make her own decisions about the situations. Some issues she faces have to do with social class being a big part of determining what you could and could not do. She also had to face issues of gender roles and independence during that time of 1760-1820. Lastly, there is also a great deal about her relationships and her love for Rochester. All these ideas tie in together and some of these aspects are portrayed similarly in the Novel and the Book but also have differences between the two. The Novel starts when Jane is a young girl and showcases her as a mistreated orph an and is not happy about her situation because she feels that no one is one her side. Jane even tells her aunt Mrs. Reed, ââ¬Å"I am glad you are no relation of mine. I will never call you aunt again as long as I live. I will never come to visit you when I am grown up; and if any one asks me how I liked you, and how you treated me, I will say the very thought of you makes me sick, and that you treated me with miserable cruelty. . . Imagine a government beholden to corporate interests, in which private corporations write laws favoring themselves to the detriment of the citizenry and small business, where the wealthiest corporations are unregulated and are taxed at extremely low rates while average citizens are required to foot the costs of an expensive and questionable war and government imposes policies in which they have little ââ¬â if any ââ¬â say. Imagine large chain stores moving into towns in which they drive all the smaller merchants out of business, then suck up local revenues which are sent to owners and stockholders far away, contributing virtually nothing to the local economy. While this may sound like the last five years of U. We will write a custom essay sample on Midterm part 2 or any similar topic only for you Order Now S. history, it was also true of the years leading up to the Revolution.à These were the economic issues that eventually led to rebellion and ultimately, independence from Britain. Tensions between the colonists began almost twenty years before rebellion finally broke out in 1775. During the ââ¬Å"French and Indian Warâ⬠à (also known as the Seven Years War), the British military was known to ââ¬Å"impressâ⬠locals into combat service against their will, and confiscate what they needed from private citizens without payment (Zinn, 67). Britain triumphed and gained territories in present-day Canada, but the cost was high. Parliamentââ¬â¢s decision to the decision to tax the colonies directly was the culmination of a long power struggle between the merchants and the landowners in the legislatures. The former believed that the Crown should go further in insuring that the colonies served the best interests of ââ¬Å"the mother country,â⬠i.e., themselves, since much of their livelihood was dependent upon trade with and imports from the colonies. Eventually, these mercantilist policies were instituted, which gave the Crown an excuse to exercise greater power in the colonies than it had before. Britain meanwhile issued the Proclamation Line in 1763, prohibiting settlement west of the Allegheny and Appalachian Mountains. The official reason was to keep peace between colonists and indigenous peoples. In reality, it was intended to favor large corporate interests in England, allowing them to monopolize trade with Natives as well as engage in land speculation. This was only the first of a series of laws favoring corporate interests over those of individuals. The following year, the British government passed the Sugar Act, which imposed a tax on molasses from the British West Indies as well as on several additional products. The purpose was to raise Crown revenues, but to the colonists, it was taxation to which they had not consented (Fone, 150). This was followed by the Stamp Act. This had a dual purpose: to raise revenue, and to ââ¬Å"gagâ⬠the North American press, which was circulating information regarding these increasingly repressive tax policies. This Act galvanized the resistance as a delegation sent a petition to King George III insisting that the colonies could be taxed only by their own consent. Parliament was forced to back down, repealing both the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act. These were replaced however with high duties on glass, lead, paper, cloth and tea. The colonists responded with a boycott which sharply reduced the number of British goods coming to the colonies ââ¬â and greatly hurting mercantile and corporate profits. Corporate interests appealed to Parliament to rescind these duties. Parliament agreed to end all but one: the Tea Tax. While tensions between Britain and its North Americas colonies were growing throughout the region for various reasons, the issue of the Tea Tax turned out to be the spark that finally lit the fuse leading to the explosion of open rebellion. What is odd is that the colonists ââ¬â hardly united, and descended from peoples that had ââ¬Å"classesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"ordersâ⬠ingrained into their culture ââ¬â would have ever gotten it in their minds to rebel in the first place. In fact, the colonists did not necessarily wish to break with Britain; they simply wanted the rights they were entitled to as British subjects, which they believed they were being denied. However, there was a philosophy that had been around for well over a century. The basis of modern democracy actually originated in the writings of Thomas Hobbes, who wrote of the ââ¬Å"social contract,â⬠and more importantly John Locke. Around 1680, he had written that government of a people has legitimacy only as long as it has consent of the people it governs, and only as long as it protected those innate, or ââ¬Å"naturalâ⬠rights that every person has by virtue of being born. Locke listed these as the rights to ââ¬Å"life, liberty and property.â⬠By the time his words found their way into the Declaration of Independence, ââ¬Å"propertyâ⬠had become ââ¬Å"the pursuit of happiness.â⬠Lockeââ¬â¢s interpretation of the ââ¬Å"social contractâ⬠theory stated that when government failed to guard those rights and no longer had the consent of the governed, it was the ââ¬Å"natural rightâ⬠of the people to overthrow it. Lockeââ¬â¢s philosophies were very influential on French writers Voltaire and Rousseau ââ¬â whose nation was instrumental in securing the colonistââ¬â¢s victory ââ¬â as well as the writings of Thomas Paine and Benjamin Franklin. In Common Sense ââ¬â a pamphlet that was circulated widely in the colonies ââ¬â echoed Locke when he called up upon the colonists to ââ¬Å"â⬠¦oppose, not only the tyranny, but the tyrant, stand forth!â⬠(Foner, 4) à Paine was also one of the first to point out the heterogeneous makeup of the colonies, being composed of peoples from several different nations, arguing that the ââ¬Å"birthday of a new world is at hand, and a race of men.â⬠Works Cited Foner, Eric. National Geographic Mysteries Underground Essay Example For Students
National Geographic: Mysteries Underground Essay National Geographic: Mysteries UndergroundThe video I reviewed was a National Geographic film called MysteriesUnderground. This video was about extraordinary sites there are to see inunderground caves. You traveled along with cave explorers and got to see allthe beautiful untouched natural formations such as gypsum chandeliers, gnarledcalcite columns, and jewel-like lakes. It showed and talked about all thecareful proceders the cave explorers go through. It also talked about how theformations were made over such a long time. I learned many interesting things that would never seem possible. Inthe worlds new most exotic ,Lechuguilla, cave there lied water so clean andclear that the cave explorers were forced to take all there clothes off beforethey swam acrossed it because the littlest dirt from any clothing wouldcontaminate the pureness of the water. All the cave explorers are very cautiousas to what they touch or where they step because some of the crystal formationsare so fragile that the slightest vibration from a voice or a footstep couldruin millions of years of forming. In some parts of caves there are giant andvery smooth ice formations that must be slid down very carefully because if theyare not taken cautiously you will pick up to much speed while sliding andfinally hit some kind of stone wall or something. One lady was not carefulenough and boy did she pay. She was only a mile and a half or so in the caveand she broke her leg. It took almost five days to get who to the surface ofthe cave where s he could be attended to. Also I found out that caves were muchlarger then I had originally thought. The largest cave now, Mammoth Cave, isover 200 miles long. And if you are exploring a cave being miles and miles fromthe entrance it is very important that you be careful because if you break yourleg that far from the entrance it would probably take months to get you outsafely. One safety precaution I learned was that when the explorers aretraveling through cold water they must make sure they dont get their upperbodywet because that will cause them to freeze and get many sicknesses that arecaused by the cold. One thing that I found interesting was that with thetechnology today you would think that we would have all the caves discovered andexplored. We arent close at all. In fact some caves have been being exploredfor years and there is still no end in sight. That just goes to show that thereis still much more to learn and discover. I would recommend this video to anyone who is fascinated by the amazingthings mother nature can create. This one hour video will give you a lifetimeof information. It reminds you that anything is possible and to keep an openmind. You would enjoy this video because it is most of the very rare filmfootage ever made on some of the amazing formations. Since no other films orshows are out there like this one, everything they say and show you is new, soyou learn a great amount. Friedberg, L (Producer), ; Friedberg, L (Director). (1992). Incorporating Human development theory
Introduction There are numerous inferences that can be drawn from Piaget and Maslowââ¬â¢s ideologies that they formulated, ratified, and presented to explain various aspects of human development and other considerable provisions. Human development is an elaborated process requiring various considerable factors in order to illuminate its diverse aspects.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Incorporating Human development theory specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Concurrently, it is crucial to consider such aspects in the context of human development. This paper endeavors to compare Piagetââ¬â¢s use of concrete and formal operations and Maslowââ¬â¢s use of concrete and abstract thoughts to establish and explain various human phenomena. Understanding this context in the realms of human development and other considerable features is important. Concurrently, it is vital to incorporate human development the ories into the drug abuse/addiction prevention theories in order to illuminate its various aspects. This is a considerable phenomenon despite the looming challenges. Piaget based his arguments on actual and formal operations. Thus, he endeavored to explain his ideologies formally and considerably. He was able to relate the nature of knowledge itself and how people develop progressively to attain various behaviors. Addiction is relevant in this context due to its gradual development in the body system. Its acquisition occurs gradually regardless of the situation. Conversely, Maslow developed numerous ideologies meant to set various human principles and explain various phenomena. He ratified credible and abstract thoughts in order to distinguish vast ideologies concerning human development. This is a crucial provision when considered in this framework. It is crucial to understand these provisions in the developmental context in order to comprehend the aspects of drug abuse and its cha racterizing addictions (Hogan, 2003). How they are similar The aspects of human development are critical in this context. Concurrently, it is important to incorporate human development theories into the prevention mechanisms (regarding addiction). These relate to the similarities drawn from ideologies presented by Piaget and Maslow. Firstly, both theorists unveil the cognitive and physical development concerns. These factors are important in understanding various aspects of human development in the context of drug abuse and addiction. Piagetââ¬â¢s concrete and formal perceptions merge perfectly with Maslowââ¬â¢s actual and abstract thoughts meant to explain various aspects of the human development.Advertising Looking for research paper on psychology? It is important to understand such provisions as demonstrated before. Precisely, both ideologies endeavor to explain various aspects of human development that can be used to understand numerous provisions in the context of drug abuse and addiction. Additionally, both theories converge at a single point with regard to human development. For example, when Maslowââ¬â¢s formulated the hierarchy of human needs, physiological provision majored in the list. This indicates how the aspects of human development and other relevant factors must be fulfilled first (Hodson, 2001). This is supported by Piaget in his actual and formalized ideologies. Addiction is a physiological provision, which must be addressed for an individual to operate normally. In this context, it is important to incorporate such provisions in the prevention mechanisms meant to alleviate the aspects of drug abuse and addiction. Treatment options recommended in this context are numerous. Nonetheless, they might possess some disparities in the realms of principles and other relevant factors. It is imperative to understand such aspects before considering the ideologies presented by these theorists as futile and void. This is a crucial consideration when discerning the similarities that exists amidst the Piaget and Maslowââ¬â¢s ideologies and human developmental principles. The developmental processes, genetic epistemologies, and other considerable life concerns are fronted by these theorists (Shaffer Kipp, 2010). They endeavor to explain various principles applicable in the prevention factors regarding drug abuse and addiction. Understanding the provision of addiction in the context of human development is important as demonstrated by both ideologies. How they are different While comparing Piagetââ¬â¢s use of concrete and formal operations and Maslowââ¬â¢s use of material and abstract thoughts, numerous disparities are discernible despite the similarities indicated earlier. Both theorists based their ideologies on varying principles with regard to human development and other considerable factors. It is crucial to understand these provisions in order to establish substantial disparities amidst the two ideologies (Hogan, 2003). Evidently, Piaget formalized his findings in order to discern critical aspects of human development, addiction processes, and other relevant provisions applicable in this context.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Incorporating Human development theory specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It is understandable to establish various components of human development in the realms of drug abuse, addiction, and other relevant provisions applicable in this context. Another disparity is that Maslow based his ideas on abstractions when making ultimate conclusions on critical matters (Hodson, 2001). Ideally, it is important to draw critical life aspects of these ideologies. The ability t o integrate the elements and effects of an activity/happening is an important concept in this case. Continuous application or use of something might trigger the aspects of addiction and other relevant provisions meant to explain this concept. It is evident that both Piaget and Maslow possess different opinions in this provision; nonetheless, there is a conventional consideration in this context. Whether there are value judgments inherent in either view Agreeably, there are value judgments inbuilt in either view. This is evident by the explanations and values possessed by both virtues. It is crucial to understand this phenomenon in various aspects. When Piaget presented his concrete and formal ideologies in order to explain the provisions of human development and other relevant aspects, several issues emerged so as to formulate addiction prevention mechanisms and other appropriate remedial factors worth consideration. Understanding the biological, cognitive, and psychological aspects of addiction is critical in this note (Shaffer Kipp, 2010). They constitute the value judgments embraced in the prevention programs meant to treat various components of addiction. Concurrently, the theories fronted by Maslow and Piaget constitute considerable and valuable provisions applicable vastly. This is quite critical in the human contexts. Concurrently, Maslowââ¬â¢s theories on the provisions of human needs and other relevant ideologies tend to explain critical aspects of human development. Thus, it is important to agree that both views have inherent value judgments. Conclusions Conclusively, comparison of Piagetââ¬â¢s use of concrete and formal operations and Maslowââ¬â¢s use of concrete and abstract thoughts indicate critical provisions in the context of human development. It is possible to incorporate the aspects of human development in the prevention programs meant to curb drug abuse and addiction. The arguments presented by Piaget in his works provide critical ideologies helpful in this context. Additionally, Maslow coined the hierarchy of human needs in order to categorize and illuminate various life provisions helpful in this context. The two ideologies presented by Piaget and Maslow contain varying similarities and other disparities. Nonetheless, both have inherent values applicable in discerning human developmental aspects.Advertising Looking for research paper on psychology? Let's see if we can help you! INTRODUCTION Knowledge DIVERSITY OF LEARNERS Consider this question often asked? What specific knowledge and skills should all students learn? How do we decide what is in or out of the curriculum? Should all students learn the same content, or should it differ for those with different aspirations, abilities, and interest? If we agree that we want students to have more than a temporary acquaintance with important concepts and skills, how do we modify the curriculum so that there is adequate time for in-dept learning? How do we assess that kind of learning? How do we incorporate the growing body of research that indicates that the most effective teaching strategies are highly content-specific strategies and that content and instruction are inseparable (National Research Council, 2000) Stating exactly what the curriculum is supposed to achieve is essential to defining who should learn what. Curriculum goals might include more students achieving higher scores on the statewide test or increased acceptance rates to prestigious universities. Interview a manager - Essay Example The procedural dimension of ethical leadership includes problem-solving and decision-making practice within the circle of ethics. For instance, ethical leadership demands that the leaders, before practicing their decisions, discuss them with parties that are going to be affected by their decisions, so as to make them feel respected. The substantive aspect of ethical leadership includes knowledge, tough standards and guts to pursue ethical directions regardless of opposition. When I asked him if he had faced any ethical conflict in his career, he told me something. Last year, when his company announced vacancies, he was appointed to interview the candidates for selection. Mr. Harrison was obese. He selected him on the seat of disabled persons. Title I of Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 states that all employers, who have at least fifteen employees working under them, must give equal chances of employment to qualified disabled persons (U.S. Department of Justice 2005). When he discussed the matter with the managing director, he said that an obese person was in no way a disabled person. He stated Carrier (2000) who affirmed that ââ¬Å"although courts initially were reluctant to recognize obesity as a qualifying disability for purposes of ADA protection, courts are increasingly willing to consider obesity as a disability giving plaintiffs status to raise ADA claims.â⬠Finally, Harrison was selected. To my question about employee development, he answered that he totally believed in the concept. According to him, flourishing employee development programs and strategies guarantee improved employeesââ¬â¢ performance, which leads to higher productivity and overall organizational success in the competitive market. The Machinist Movie Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The Machinist Movie - Essay Example It looks at the protagonist of the movie and looks into the reason why this person cannot get any sleep and is frequently attacked by severe paranoia. This is important because catharsis is natural but when people start hiding from their own emotions, sometimes they have to face severe consequences. In this movie, the protagonist, Trevor Reznik is an average male working at National Machines, a manufacturing facility that builds machine parts. One year back, he hits a little boy on the road with his car while reaching for the cigarette burner. He drives away in his car demonstrating a classic example of ââ¬Ëhit and runââ¬â¢. Although he escapes but this incident gets to him and he is unable to get any sleep. His body does steal a few moments of sleep when he is unaware but these comforting moments last only for seconds and he wakes up again. He tries to bury the whole road accident inside his head but he remains unsuccessful. Running away from the scene of the accident was his instinctive self-defense mechanism but keeping it in him without sharing was a bigger mistake where he went against nature. The insomnia starts eating away Trevorââ¬â¢s peace of mind and he is never really awake as he starts hallucinating and imagining different things. He tries to lock up severe emotions inside him. He never talks to anyone about the road accident but he is unable to get rid of this memory that has stuck in his thought cycle. He reflects to a prostitute that he hasnââ¬â¢t slept in over a year. Moreover, he loses his body mass considerably. He starts looking sick, like a drug addict. He is unable to perform his job without getting into trouble. He is having troubles living a normal life all because the guilt is making him abnormal. But more troubles are yet to come as his hallucinations begin and he gets shocked at seeing normal things such as car cigarette burner, which reminds him of the road accident. He doesnââ¬â¢t get memory flashbacks when he sees the cigarette lighter but he remembers that such a piece of equipment is significant somehow. His subconscious still tries to bring out that memory but he suppresses it and this conflict represses such memories. He gets the feeling that something is there but he never gets to know what exactly it is that is bothering him. He starts seeing this big fat man, Ivan, who is also a projection of his mind and not a real human. This big fat and mean looking person is only a reflection of himself. That is how he sees himself as a repulsive fat person. This is another attempt of his subconscious mind to relive the trauma that he is hiding from. The country of Armagede - Essay Example A wild animal refuge spans an area of some 1500 miles to the south. This refuge is heavily guarded against poachers and contributes more than three million dollars a year in tourism dollars that offset the cost of the reserve and contribute to the hospitality and cultural art industries in the country. The country supports a population of 4,763,271 Armagede nationals with about population of 3,445,192 who are largely subsistent farmers with a per capita income of about population of $223. The largest concentration of citizens is in the two largest cities in the north and south where residents are employed in government jobs. There is a population of approximately 544 people per square mile. In the past decade the country has begun to maintain vital statistic and economic records that help show a continuing improvement in the countryââ¬â¢s economic indicators. The per capita income has increased by nearly 5% per household over the past decade, as represented by the graph below. The re is one university, Aduine University, in the north, a state sponsored university staffed largely by well educated professors from countries that offer incentives for foreign academic services. Most of the graduates go on to work for the government and in state sponsored elementary, middle schools and high schools. A large number of graduates leave the country for graduate studies in medicine and law, but statistics support the fact that these individuals return to Armagede upon completion of their studies.

Acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover by Tata
Acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover by Tata In 2008 Tata Motors, an Indian automaker wanted to expand its product portfolio and diversify its market base. It acquired the two iconic British brands Jaguar and Land Rover from the American automaker Ford Motor Corporation. This acquisition gave the company access to premium cars, a chance to add two iconic luxury brands to its stable and a global footprint. It gave struggling Ford a chance to rid itself of two loss-making vehicle units. JLR SWOT and PESTEL Analysis 2018 > The deal was transformational. It catapulted Tata Motors from a commercial vehicle and small-car manufacturer to a global player with marquee brands in its portfolio. The scale of the acquisition also was large relative to the size of Tata Motors The purchase especially that of Jaguar, by an Indian company was viewed as toppling of the world order and many critics expressed doubts about Tatas ability to retain the quality and standard of Jaguar Land Rover. Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata assured the world that we have enormous respect for the two brands and will endeavour to preserve and build on their heritage and competitiveness, keeping their identities intact. For the 12-month period ended Dec 31, 2010, the auto makers revenue was in excess of 9.2 billion pounds ($15 billion), and net income for that period was $1.5 billion. The Tata Group, led by Mr. Ratan Tata, was determined to make the deal work and put to use the groups management skills, financial resources and credibility. To staunch the haemorrhage at the British unit, Tatas management focused on reducing costs, improving efficiencies and managing cash flow lessons that Tata Motors had learned during the downturn in 2001. Tata also infused $1 billion to fund operations and new product launches. When the market turned, the premier car maker was well poised to reap the benefits and turned profitable during the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2009, with a net profit of 55 million pounds ($90.6 million). HISTORY OF JAGUAR AND LANDROVER: Jaguar and Land Rover are two iconic British brands that were acquired by Ford Motor Corporation in 1989. Land Rover is a British car manufacturer that specializes in four wheel driveÃâà vehicles. The name started from a single vehicle that was named by the Rover Company as Land Rover in the year 1948. After developments, this became a porch of a variety of four-wheel drive models such as Discovery, Defender, Range Rover and Freelander. In its history this company has had a number of ownership (Holbeche, 2009). In 1967 Leyland Motor Corporation absorbed the Rover Company. Leyland then formed a merger with the British Motor Holdings and formed British Leyland. The new company broke up in the 1980s but in 1988 the Land Rover (Rover Group) was purchased by British Aerospace. The Rover Group was acquired by BMW in the year 1994 but the merger broke down in 2000 where The Rover Group was taken up by Ford Motor Company. It was in the year 2008 that Land Rover was sold to Tata Motors t ogether with Jaguar cars (Johnson Turner, 2009). Jaguar Cars Ltd or Jaguar is a British luxury car manufacturer whose headquarters are located in Coventry UK. In 1922 the company was founded as Swallow Sidecar Company that used to make motorcycle sidecars and later passenger cars. After the Second World War, the SS connotations were unfavourable and then the name changed to Jaguar. The name changed to Leyland and eventually British Leyland in 1984 when it was listed in the London Stock Exchange. THE SALE: In the year 2007, the Ford Motor Company, a widely respected company which also happened to be the worlds third largest automaker based on vehicle sales worldwide, reported the largest annual loss in the history of establishment of the company since 1903.The Company reported a loss of $12.8 billion. It also stated that it would not return to profitability until 2009. Ford stated that weak economy is the primary reason to sell Jaguar and Land Rover. The two brands were however suffering losses often resulting in closure of few manufacturing plants and heavy cut in workforce The strategic Purchase: Tata Motors Limited stood to have both strategic and economic gains form the acquisition of both Jaguar and Land Rover. First and foremost, the deal would assist the company in acquiring a global footprint as well as entering the prestigious segment of the worldwide automobile market. After this deal, Tata Motors owned the cheapest car in the world (The Nano) going at around 2,500 as well as some of the most expensive and luxurious vehicles such as Land Rover and the Jaguar . Though the deal solicited some skeptism based on the fact that Tata was an Indian company that was about to display the luxury brands, ownership should not be a major issue in terms of the sales, service and marketing. Tata Motors will be promoted to become a major player in this industry after the acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover both of which have global presence as well as a good repertoire in terms of established brands, (Johnson Turner, 2009). The deal would also assist Tata Motors in reducing the dependence of the company to the Indian market which was at 90% of the companys sales before the acquisition. It is in this view that the company stands to gain a lot from the deal as its market would be spread out to other geographical regions across the globe. The opportunities in terms of the diverse customer segments would also be increased (Holbeche, 2009). There was the possibility of increased in terms of economies of scale which in turn promotes the cost efficiency. In real sense the deal will appear as an amalgamation of three different companies that have already gone into the market and as a result, the new firm that will be formed after the acquisition will have some increased operation scale. This will mean that the output production will rise and as a result the cost per unit production will be greatly reduced (Johnson Turner, 2009). Ãâà Tata Motors Limited prospected that the acquisition of the two Brands would enable it to have an all-inclusive line up of products ranging from cheapest to the most expensive automobiles in the market. The company has marked its presence in the local market (India) in the low as well as the mid-class market segments and after the acquisition; the company is likely to experience some of the segmentation of the markets that it has never plunged into. Jaguar cars are prestigious and luxurious and as a result the cars have an established market for most of the celebrities especially in the music world. On the other hand the Land Rover is a heavy duty vehicle and based on the fact that it is a four-wheel drive it is preferred by most of the governments to carry out different tasks in the rural areas where the road network is not developed, the vehicles are also famous among the affluent class of citizens and therefore the deal will enable Tata Motors to plunge into these market segmentati ons in which the company was not famous in (Johnson Turner, 2009). It is also worth to note that the other than the product incorporation, the company was facing tight competition from some of the chief opulence vehicles producers. Ãâà This segment of the market brought a lot of profits to the company it was highly competitive in terms of the global market. It was the prestigious brands that dominated the market based on the fact that they had the support of the big automobile companies. The German Porsche and the American Volkswagen companies backed some of the luxurious brands such as Audi and Porsche. Other brands that had the support of big companies included Mercedes, Lexus, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Fiat. After the deal, Tata Motors Limited would now be able to tackle these brands competitively (Holbeche, 2009). 2- What strengths of Jaguar and Land Rover were the most valuable for Tata? Through Tata Motors acquisition of two of the most respected and iconic British brands that is Land Rover and Jaguar from the Ford Motors based in the United States, Tata motors stands to enjoy some gain on several grounds from that deal. This acquisition came in handy for Tata since it helped the company in acquiring a global foundation hence ushering them into a more extended premier segment in regard to the global market of auto mobile products. Through this acquisition Tata would slide into possession of the cheapest car in the world thus the Nano at $2,500 in addition to recognized and well respected luxurious brands like the Land Rover and the Jaguar. Tata motors acquisition of these two top brands was that the acquisition of JRL would help it reduce its over dependence on India as it formed its capital marker accounting for almost 90 percent of all of its sales. The company was convinced that this acquisition would present the company with a lot of opportunities to venture its business across different segments that marked a lot of potential in customer acquisition (Bhabatosh, 2010). In this regard Tata gained almost a 100 percent stakes in some companies. For instance it gained stakes in three U.K. pants, approximately twenty six sales companies nationwide, two advanced engineering and design centres, IP right, allowances for taxes amounting to approximately $1.1 B in addition to $600 worth of pension. Tatas main motivation in making this acquirement was based on the fact that they would be now able to outsource their products to many countries globally. Other than taking technology from these two brands Tata intended to use their strong markets so that they can introduce their other brands in those areas where these two brands have already penetrated and established in a bit to expand their market a bit more. As highlighted above Tata wanted to build a name outside India and hence make its presence felt in India. Most of it brands had only established a strong market in India and hence not particularly popular in the global market. Tata therefore capitalized on its desire to establish a greatly diversified line up of auto mobiles as this acquisition helped it up grade since it now recognizes as one of the manufactures that owns the cheapest car to some of the worlds most expensive models. Apart from this Tata gained in terms of new technological know-how and all the viable networks that can come as a log with is such a chance hence as earlier stated it will be able to penetrate the global market and hence compete with other manufactures who have already embraced latest technology (Bhabatosh, 2010). On top of this Tata would also be able to upgrade its old products that it has been offering in the blooming local or home market. In addition to using the companies technology Tata will also u se its facilities of production to make desirable improvements in its trucks and cars. Though the acquisition will cost Tata Company an approximate of $1 Billion it would actualize Tatas dream to go international band hence become one of the first brand in India to make global products hence its business will achieve diversity overseas. Major challenges: Despite the benefits that have been identified above Tata also underwent some major challenges as a result of the acquisition of the Jaguar and the Land Rover. One of the major challenges that the Tata Company would face was nurturing these two brands and making them thrive in their own books in the market.à The jaguar and the Land Rover are luxurious and expensive cars and there fore Tata has the uphill task of maintaining it standards and also up grading them so that they will be able to compete with other luxurious brands who are upgrading day in day out in a bid to try and fetch good market by attracting more customers. On the other hand the acquisition also goes to the negative for Tata since it increased Tata volatility in earnings since this happened at a very difficult economic crisis in the JRLs chief markets including the United States and also Europe. Tata motors were liable to incurring huge capital expenditures in its plan to make investments in another U.S $2.3 billion it would spend on the acquisition (Aswathappa, 2008).à Tata motors had also at the same period incurred huge capital expenditures in regard to making developments on one of its cheapest cars the Nano in addition to a joint venture with fiat in order for them to make their manufacturing of some of their vehicles in India. The other problems will be that Tata will encounter difficulties in leveraging Jaguar and Land Rover dealers to sell Tatas products.Ãâà This is because Tata has no obvious synergies between them andà JLR and in addition to this Tata has no expertise in kits marketing segments especially at such at a time when some of the markets like the United States and Europe are at a low tide. Tata Motors will also have to contend with stiff competition from other companies that have a good command in selling luxurious car in market segments that have been highly profitable but have been facing intense global competition (Aswathappa, 2008). These segments have other dominant brands which receive a lot of support from big automobile companies. For instanced the Volkswagen which is a car manufacturer of the American decent had been very aggressively backing up their brands like Audi as well as other models like the Mercedes from Daimler and Toyota with it Lexus were putting a lot of pressur e on Tata. The other major challenge that Tata will have in regard to making sales in the Jaguar and the Land Rover will be to sell them in a market that is so competitive and one which is not also growing. If stricter impositions on emission norms are made it would also be a very big challenge for Tata Motors Limited. Apart from these emission and competition norms Tata Motors Limited also face a major challenge in the funding as well as management. To go back to the governments tendency to make increments in markets that are developing to impose emission norms that are stricter the future of Tata Motors would be facing an uphill task. Though ford continues to support Tata Motors with engine supplies and technological support, Tata will eventually have to come up with their own capabilities in regard to building engines that are more advanced, safer and transmission systems in order to be at par with other luxury vehicles manufactures (Aswathappa, 2008). Failure to establish such kinds of capabilities difficulties will arise in distinguishing Tatas brands from those of its competitors. Recommendations: The acquisition was thought to have a host of synergies. For instance, from this deal Tata expected to venture into and premium all terrain vehicles and luxury vehicle segments (Bruner 2004). By combining the resource and the strength of both companies Tata expected to undergo a major improvement in its international market position, something that it ultimately underwent after the successful consummation of the deal.Ãâà This gave the company an entry point to the luxury car market a move that was expected to improve their balance sheet and increase their presence in the global market .this is because the luxury car market has a global presence .Tata motors also expected to improve their global marketing by acquiring the brands that were already known all over the globe by exploiting the markets that the acquired company already had ventured into. The company also expected to tap the technical expertise that the Land Rover and Jaguar employees had. Therefore the company expecte d to improve their sales and manufacturing practices this is gaining from the expertise that they had acquired while work for their former company. There were also expectations that the skills that they had acquired while working for the acquired company could be passed on to the Tata company employees through their interactions therefore the company had expectations that their human resource capital would improve as a result of working and interacting with the employees of the acquired brands. Thus their combined technological expertise from the two companies was also expected to give birth to more superior products in future and new better practices that could lead to more market opportunities.à The acquisition was also expected to enhance the sharing of industrys best practices and especially in manufacturing sector and also in the system and process of quality assurance. This is because the two companies had different best practices that made them unique and as a result of their coming together new improved ways of doing things was one of the expected outcomes. In 2007 the acquired company had 75% sales in the UK, USA and European market while Tata was more reliant on the Asian market especially the Indian market therefore Tata motorsÃâà expected toÃâà exploit these market that the acquired company had already broken to .in other words if Tata motors had tried to enter these markets with only their own brands the marketing cost would have been extremely higher and therefore increased their cost but with the brands that had already acquired consumer loyalty all over Europe and in the UK and USA market marketing their own brands alongside the acquired ones was ex pected to be gainful and less cost prohibitive. The move was expected to reduce the Tata motors reliance on the Indian market and the company expected to improve their sales and profits through this diversity. It was also through this acquisition that Tata got a broader utility vans and SUV portfolio and therefore improved their range of brands. This improvement in their portfolio would have cost the Tata motors a lot in terms of designing and market entry not to mention the manufacturing cost.à This implies that they acquired the technical skills that already had been applied and would have increased their production costs of the company to develop on their own and to introduce their products into the market before winning the customers. Therefore through this acquisition Tata gained in terms of cost reduction market, portfolio improvement .In the luxury car market Tata would have probably taken years to break into this market and spent a lot of money to design a product that would have become widely acceptable as a luxurious modelÃâà and compete withÃâà those already in the market and are widely accepted in this class as the jaguar .Therefore by acquiring jaguar the compan y immediately gained a competitive advantages in the industry and in the luxury car market since the brand was already widely accepted (Carney 2009). In terms of saving time and costs therefore the company immediately gained after acquiring the jaguar brand. This puts Tata in an advantageous position in the luxury car market in that should they choose to increase their portfolio in this sector they can market their new models alongside the jaguar model and therefore exploit the brand loyalty that jaguar commands in the market. The company also gained from the supply chains that the acquired brands already had this also plays a part in their cost reduction strategies. Tata had the advantage of having lower production cost while their acquisition had higher production cost and therefore unprofitable. The acquisition therefore could help the jaguar and land rover models reduce their cost by applying the cost saving measures that made Tata enjoy lower production cost. This would certainly help the two brands return to profitability. Conclusion The acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover was gainful to the Tata motors in that the company immediately gained competitive advantages in the industry since Jaguar and Land Rover in the SUV and luxury car market these brands were already widely accepted. The company also gained cost reduction advantages because in the luxury car market Tata would have probably taken years to break into this market and spent a lot of money to design a product that would have become widely acceptable as a luxurious model .Tata also gained in that they acquired the technical skills that already had been applied .They also lowered their production costs since to develop on their own brands and to introduce their products into the market and win their customers would have increased their costs.

The Alternative Energy Source to Oil Essay -- Renewable Energy Solar P
The Alternative Energy Source to Oil Introduction 1.0à à à à à ââ¬Å"Renewable Energyâ⬠is the term used to describe those energy flows that occur naturally and repeatedly in the environment, e.g. from the sun, wind and the oceans, and from plants and the fall of water. It also refers to the energy available from wastes and to the emerging clean technology of fuel cells. There are wide ranges of renewable energy sources/technologies, varying in technical and commercial viability. These include: â⬠¢Ã à à à à Solar Power (Photovoltaic) â⬠¢Ã à à à à Hydro ââ¬â electric Power â⬠¢Ã à à à à Hydrogen Fuel Cells â⬠¢Ã à à à à Geothermal â⬠¢Ã à à à à Wind Power â⬠¢Ã à à à à Nuclear Power 1.1à à à à à The modern drive to harness renewable energy began in the 1970ââ¬â¢s. It was promoted by concerns over the price and availability of fossil fuels ââ¬â oil, gas, and coal. Fossil fuels are finite ââ¬â only coal is predicted to be available in significant quantities at the end of the 21st century at current rates of consumption. Using fossil fuels to generate electricity also produces pollutants, which can lead to environmental problems (such as acid rain and the ââ¬Å"greenhouse effectâ⬠). By contrast, renewable energy produces few, if any, harmful emissions. Exploiting renewable, which at present meet over 2% of the UKââ¬â¢s electricity needs, also reduces the rate at which other energy resources are used up. With the worldââ¬â¢s population continuing to grow, renewable energy promises to play an increasingly significant role in the future. 1.2à à à à à The estimated oil reserves in the Earthââ¬â¢s crust are about 1 trillion barrels. Oil consumption is at 25 billion barrels per year and increasing at 1.5% per year. At current rates of consumption, measured against known reserves, there is only a 30-year supply of oil in the Earthââ¬â¢s crust. Even if the reserve estimate were doubled, it is a moral imperative that the population takes immediate action to develop a sustainable energy economy. Solar Energy 2.0à à à à à Solar energy is quite simply the energy produced by the sun and collected elsewhere, normally the Earth. The sun creates its energy through a thermonuclear process that converts about 650,000,000 tons of hydrogen to helium every second. The process creates heat and electromagnetic radiation. The electromagnetic radiation (including visible light, infra-red light, and ultra-violet radiation) streams out into space i... ..., such as natural gas. Practical fuel cell systems are therefore likely to include a fuel processor, which generates hydrogen from hydrocarbons. There are a number of types of fuel cells currently the focus of development work: â⬠¢Ã à à à à Alkaline fuel cells ââ¬â AFC â⬠¢Ã à à à à Direct methanol fuel cells ââ¬â DMFC â⬠¢Ã à à à à Molten carbonate fuel cells ââ¬â MCFC â⬠¢Ã à à à à Phosphoric acid fuel cells ââ¬â PAFC â⬠¢Ã à à à à Proton exchange membrane fuel cells ââ¬â PEM â⬠¢Ã à à à à Regenerative fuel cells ââ¬â RFC â⬠¢Ã à à à à Solid oxide fuel cells ââ¬â SOFC 3.5à à à à à Fuels cells are inherently clean and efficient and are uniquely able to address the issues of energy security and environmental degradation. Now market experience is showing that the technology provides a range of critical benefits that no other single power generation technology can match. â⬠¢Ã à à à à Fuel cells are quiet and reliable with no moving parts. â⬠¢Ã à à à à They produce no emissions (other than water) when using pure hydrogen and very light emissions when using hydrocarbon or alcohol fuel. â⬠¢Ã à à à à They are extremely efficient compared to conventional means of generating electricity typically 40 ââ¬â 50%. â⬠¢Ã à à à à PEM fuel cells have a very low operating temperature

Global Warming Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Global Warming - Assignment Example Carbon dioxide, though in very less quantity was also found to be very effective. This effect was later called Greenhouse Effect. It is a natural process that restricts the emitted energy from earthââ¬â¢s surface to go back into space. The solar energy is allowed to come in the atmosphere, but the re-emitted infrared energy from the earthââ¬â¢s surface is absorbed by the atmosphere instead. This process causes an increase in the atmospheric temperature and therefore, a cause for global warming. The gases that absorb the emitted energy are called the greenhouse gases. Human Involvement The emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere means reinforcement of the Greenhouse Effect. Following are the major greenhouse gases produced one way or the other by human involvement; Carbon Dioxide Carbon dioxide being the biggest contributor to Greenhouse Effect is produced by fossil fuel burning, biomass burning and a byproduct in industrial process; in particular cement production. It has a lifetime of 5 to 200 years and contributes 60 percent to global warming (Archer et al., 2009, p. 121). The industrial age has changed the natural cycle of our planet. Carbon dioxide levels are the highest recorded in 650,000 years (Gore, 2006, p. 67). This data for the last 650,000 years was taken by analyzing ice deposits in the Antarctic. Al Gore famously argued in ââ¬Å"The Inconvenient Truthâ⬠that this data shows a striking relation between carbon dioxide level and global temperature. It shows a steep rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide since the industrial revolution. Fossil fuels are still the primary source of energy and carbon dioxide is a byproduct. At a global scale, our actions have contributed towards increasing level of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Methane Methane is... After going through the major contributing factors involved in global warming, the most compelling evidence point towards relation of atmospheric carbon dioxide and global temperature. The industrial revolution and development over the years was based on fossil fuel as the primary source of energy. It is used in almost all of our development processes and forms the backbone of modern development. We thought that our contributions can never affect our planet at such a large scale. Our contributions have certainly led to the highest level of carbon dioxide in 650,000 years. This reading is a proof that this deviation from normal cycles must be caused by an outside factor; the humans. The critics have taken an approach to explain this change in global temperature as part of natural cycles related to sun cycles and orbital variations. These are, however, not adequate in magnitude to disturb global temperature at an alarming rate. Our dependence on fossil fuel has caused fear in policy ma kers to find a suitable replacement in form of alternative energy or clean energy. Our economic system depends on fossil fuel as well and the infrastructure of our societies is based on it.

The US Importation Benefits for World Development Term Paper
The US Importation Benefits for World Development - Term Paper Example Countries trade with each other because of the concept of comparative advantage and specialization.à Using the concept of Adams Smith as the basis of the theory it would not able to remember the foundation of having to import or to buy when it would cost more to make. If a foreign country can supply the United States with a commodity which would be cheaper than it can make, then there is a reason to buy from said foreign while at the same time allowing some of the produce of the US industry to be sold. In other words, the US would produce where it has some advantage. The need to specialize and trade for the same reason should govern the behavior of individuals at it meant to result in greater out and income.à A lawyer who is also a skilled painter can benefit to just hire a painter to paint his house. It is assumed that the lawyer can earn $50 dollars per hour and that the painter earns $20 an hour. Although the lawyer is a good painter, he would do best to just specialize in his work as a lawyer by hiring a painted, as he could be saving $20 per hour. That the world economy is benefited by US importation cannot be denied. à à One cannot talk about the economy without going back to things about demand and supply of good and services. The demanders are the households, individuals, and entities and the suppliers are the firms. This interaction could result in economic activities that will the cause the continuous production of needs and wants as sustained by the continuing demand.à From the macroeconomic model, the economy of every country is then measured by GDP growth with the necessary components of consumption, investment, government spending, and net export or the result of exports after deducting imports. Imports by the US may result therefore to trade deficit whether the US could actually be consuming more than it produces or exports. It may there have a negative effect on its GDP. However, in business, oneââ¬â¢s loss is anotherââ¬â¢s gain.

Strategic finance essay with word counts no less than 1500
Strategic finance with word counts no less than 1500 - Essay Example Like any other capital budgeting model, CAPM has its own weaknesses and strengths. In order to improve its usefulness, the standard capital asset pricing model has undergone various developments and modifications in the recent past. Since its conception about four decades ago, the Capital Asset Pricing Model has been used widely in applications to estimate cost of capital of firms and evaluate the performance of asset portfolios in companies. This report argues that CAPM has received such a wide support and use in the industry despite its strong assumptions because it provides powerful and reliable predictions about risk measurements and the relationship between risk and expected return. CAPM has several problems which are considered by many as the results of theoretical failures emanating from the strong assumptions of the model (Rubinstein 2006). However, they could also be caused by the difficulties of its empirical implementation. Although these problems are common, it is also understood that other models have their problems too. Therefore, the best model is the one which has proved to be successful in its application. Capital Asset Pricing Model is the model with such wide and successful application becaus e it provides powerful and reliable predictions about risk and returns of a given portfolio of assets. The Capital Assets Pricing Model (CAPM) suggests that the equilibrium rates of return of risky assets in the market have a linear relationship with the market portfolio. CAPM is used to establish a theoretical value of required rate of return of an asset in a diversified portfolio. This takes into consideration the systematic and market risks which are non-diversifiable risks (Rubinstein 2006). The model also considers the markets expected return and the theoretical risk-free assets expected return. CAPM draws from the portfolio theory developed by Harry Markowitz (1959). The formula of calculating expected return of an asset portfolio

Water Resource Challenges Essay Example for Free
Water Resource Challenges Essay Irrigation allows farmers to increase the productivity of land. Food production is an important concern particularly with the ever increasing population thus it is essential that even arid and semiarid lands are utilized. This is only possible through irrigation. Unfortunately, traditional irrigation generally makes inefficient use of water. This involves flooding the land or diverting water through open channels. However, plants absorb only about 40 percent while the rest evaporates into the atmosphere or seeps into the ground. One of the most important innovations in agricultural water conservation is micro irrigation which is also called drip or trickle irrigation. Micro irrigation includes all methods of frequent water application, in small flow rates, on or below the soil surface. Water is distributed using an extensive hydraulic pipe network that conveys water from its source to the plant. Ideally, the volume of water is applied directly to the root zone in quantities that is measured in accordance to the plantââ¬â¢s absorption capacity. Due to the manner in which water is applied by a micro irrigation system, only a portion of the soil surface and root zone of the total field is wetted. An efficiency in irrigation is achieved that result in a significant reduction in water use and even that of fertilizers which can be conveyed through the same system. With water concentrated on the area where it is most needed, it also allows the safe use of recycled water and even water sources with high salt content without danger to the over soil productivity. However, the costs can be prohibitive thus not all are able to install such a system in the farms.

A Fire Alarm System | Engineering Essay
A Fire Alarm System | Engineering Essay It is more prudent to head off a disaster beforehand than to deal with it after it occurs. Fire alarms are one of the most useful ways to avoid fire deaths. A fire alarm system is part of the total security system providing fire protection. Installation of fire alarm system gives rise to numerous benefits such as safety of occupant of a building, reducing loss of property or early notification to fire department. Two hundred years ago, early Americans fire alarms were very creative. The different ways to announce a fire were by blowing whistles, ringing church bells or even shooting guns into the air. Due to the creativeness and inventiveness of early scientists, alarm systems were revolutionized. They were using the telegraph technology [1]. Ensuing decades into the 21st century produces multi-functional community fire reporting methods through wireless transmitter. Consequently, alarm systems were installed in private houses and business for security reasons. The first fire alarm system was created in the year 1658. There was no technology used. The New Yorks first fire department employed eight men. Nightly, the firemen were walking the streets to check for fires. In the 1850s, the Australian created the hand-shaken wooden rattle alarm which awoke people from impending harm. After the creation of the telegraph, forthcoming fire alarms were improved by employing this technology. Using teleg raph technology, in 1852, William F. Channing and Moses Farmer designed two fire alarm boxes with each containing a telegraphic key. With reporting a neighborhood fire, the person cranks the attached handle on the box releasing the key to send out a message of the box number to a central alarm station. Upon receiving the message, the telegrapher at central headquarters sent the corresponding address of the box location to the fire department response team [2]. Consequently, more advance technologies were used to create fire alarm which made the latter more effective in numerous ways. One of the most common types of fire alarm system is the smoke alarm. A smoke alarm is one that uses a smoke detector as a device that detects smoke to activate the alarm system. Although the use of smoke detector as sensing element is mostly used in fire alarm, the latter is not fully effective. According to Journal of Safety Research, improved efforts are needed for the functional use of smoke alarm to saves more lives. To improve the functioning of fire alarms, the type of sensor used must be changed [3]. Sensors play a fundamental role to any measurement and automation application. A sensor is a device that converts a change in a physical condition to a measurable response. One of the most useful types of sensor used in fire alarm is the temperature sensor. A temperature sensor is one that converts heat energy in electrical energy. That is, the temperature scale is calibrated accordingly to a voltage scale. There are several temperature sensors, a few of them are, thermocouples, thermistors and thermostats among others [4]. In most of the electronic circuitry, signals from sensors are processed using a microcontroller. A microcontroller is a small computer mounted on a single integrated circuit. It is divided into different section namely the processor core, memory and programmable input and output peripheral. The different types of microcontroller used are Programmable Logic Device (PLD), Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Peripheral Interface Controller and the most recent one the Matrix Industrial Automotive Controller (MIAC). The MIAC is an industrial grade control unit which can be used to control a wide range of different electronic systems. Programming the MIAC system is typically done using Flowcode, which is a simple microcontroller language that uses the same principle as flowchart. In this project, a fire alarm will be installed in a chemical laboratory. One of the crucial aspects while working with chemical substances is temperature. The system which will be created will have as main objective to regulate in temperature of the laboratory and in case of fire to activate the fire alarm and its entire component. The system will have as input a temperature sensor which will read the temperature of the room. The signals from the temperature sensor will be used as the microcontroller input. The output of the microcontroller will vary according to the temperature of the room. The three main functions of the microcontroller are to activate the air conditioner system when the temperature of the room is high. Furthermore, at low temperature the microcontroller will activate the heater system. Finally, at very high temperature, that is in case of fire, the system will activate the fire alarm, the sprinklers, close the windows and doors after all occupants of the laborato ry have left the premises. Closure of the windows and doors prevent the exposure of the fire to oxygen and avoiding the fire to expand on a larger scale. 1.2 Aim of the project The aim of the study is to design a system which will be used in a chemical laboratory. In case of very high temperature in the room denoting a fire, the system activates a fire alarm and all its components. Moreover, when the temperature of the room is low the heater system will be activated and when the temperature is high the air conditioner system will be activated. The system will have as input a temperature sensor and the MIAC as microprocessor to process the signals from the temperature sensor and activate the required system as its output. 1.3 Objectives of the Project The objectives of the project are as follows: To understand the structure and operation of the MIAC. To study the flowcode programming technique. To understand how to interface MIAC to the inputs and outputs. To design a program that meets the requirements of the system. To build a model of the system with all its components working accordingly. 1.4 Structure of the report 1.5 Brief Literature Review In the United State (US), most lethal injury that occurs in houses is caused by fires and burns. One of the most persuasive ways to prevent death and injury from fire is by installing a fire alarm. It is an effective method if regular maintenance is done on the alarm system regularly. Statistic shows that 95% of the houses in the US have a fire alarm; there is still a high percentage of fatal injury caused by fire. Due to lack of maintenance of the alarm, the latter tend to be ineffective. According to the finding in the Journal of Safety [3], theres a huge gap between number of smoke alarm present and the number of lives saved in fire tragedy. In order to improve the efficiency of alarm, campaign shall be done to make people aware of the danger if maintenance is not performed regularly. Accordingly, the most vulnerable group of people from fire death is the young children, older adults and the disabled person. Alarm system is an important aspect in processing industry. In industry where products are manufactured in line processing, alarm system plays a fundamental role in alerting the operators that a strange event has occur or equipment is not behaving according to normal conditions. For safe operation of the alarm system, regular alarm assessment is required for alarm management life cycle [5]. Regular assessment provides feedback for fine tuning the system resulting to a good working condition. There are two aspects in fire alarm design. The first aspect, the engineering aspect consist of the designing the alarm generating algorithm. The algorithm can be simple limit checking on a raw process to much complex one such as using machine learning tools for fault classification. The second aspect of the alarm system is the way that errors are notified in order that necessary action is taken at the right time to solve for the problem that occurred. Human Machine Interface [6] is an elemental part in the second aspect. In order to test for the performance of alarm system with respect to the first aspect of alarm design, graphical tools are used. Two graphical tools which are commonly used are firstly the High Density Alarm Plot (HDAP) and the Alarm Similarity Color Map (ASCM). The High Density Alarm Plot is an appropriate tool for visualizing large amount of alarm data of a plant over a selected time range. The HDAP gives a global picture of the alarm system without getting a deeper insight of how the latter works. The HDAP has the capability to identify visual periods of plant instability. By instability we mean the period of time where a high number of alarm is activated simultaneously in a short time period. The Alarm Similarity Color Map (ASCM) is software for graph plotting. There are several steps in plotting the ASCM graph [7]. The steps are follows under the assumption that the co-occurrence of two events follow a homogeneous Poison process and calculate the probability that the number of o verlaps is less than the maximum overlaps calculated for various lag. In most of the industrial system, the aim of the factory is to ensure that operation is run fluidly and without any abrupt interruption. Most modern industries use latest technology to ensure that the work is done correctly and effectively. The latest technologies consist of using sensors to gather information. Sensors are used to communicate the physical and environmental conditions under which the plant is running [8]. Different sensors are installed at various places in the factory to capture the information required. Under normal conditions, the plant shall operate smoothly. On the other hand, when a sensor captures a change in any one of the variables, operators are notified trough an alarm system. An activated alarm system indicates an abnormality in the plant processing [8]. In order to minimize the risk of injury or even death of people inside the plant, the fault should be identified rapidly and remedy actions shall be taken as soon as possible. Using sensors to gather information of the different variable, the running conditions of the factory are monitored thoroughly minimizing the risk that an abnormal behavior goes undetected. In contrast, with small changes in variables being monitored, sensors are prone to capture unimportant events. The slight changes in variables activate the alarm unnecessarily; this is known as nuisance alarm. Nuisance alarm conveys false impression of the true nature of the problem [8]. False alarm contributes to a more stressful working environment thus reducing the performance of operator to response to true alarm. In 1994, 11 minutes prior to explosion in the Texaco Milford Haven Refinery the two operators present at that time had to distinguish, acknowledge and act on 275 alarms [9]. We can conclude that for the proper operation of a factory, it is important to manage the alarm system effectively. There are different approaches to detect faults. Fault detection can be globally classified into two groups, namely model-based and signal processing based. Model based fault detection is more present in areas such as control theory and engineering [10]. Since it is very ambitious to reach precisely a mathematical model in practical situation, the use of model-based scheme is limited. Moreover, it is a tedious task and it is not always sure that the mode will be accurate enough to reflect the practical situation. The most popular fault detection system used nowadays in factories is simple limit checking of a directly measured variable [10]. This system is easy and simple to implement. In spite of its simplicity, the threshold level should be selected properly which directly affects the number of false and missed alarm. A false alarm is one that is raise without the presence of any abnormality in the process [8]. Missed alarm is an alarm that is not raised in the presence of fault [8]. When a wrong threshold level is chosen in the simple limit checking method, it results in greater number of false and missed alarm. When a fault occurs, the alarm systems may not be activated instantaneously. This occurs due to different delays of the system. There are different reasons causing this delay to a system. The different types of delay are network delay, bad implementation delay, sensor failure and data loss delay among others [8]. Moreover, the way the parameters of the alarm system are set can cause also rise the delay time of the system to response to a change in variables. To construct a trustworthy and effective alarm system three performance specifications should be taken into consideration namely false alarm rate, missed alarm rate and detection delay. 1.6 Summary From the information gathered so far, we can deduce that there is a need to research on new types of effective fire alarm system. Since the actual fire alarm systems are not effective as they shall be, an intelligent and practical system will be developed to serve for this purpose. The developed system will be controlled by a Matrix Automotive Multimedia Controller. The proposed system shall successfully deal with fire outbreak and also regulate the temperature of the room.
